https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=N1XuElBymyk The 74th anniversary of U.S. Naval Construction Forces is coming up and thousands of Seabees around the country are no doubt locking down dates as we speak. One enterprising petty officer, a builder named Landon Bentz, put together a celebrity video proposal in the grand tradition of viral military ball invitations. He has requested the company of actress Sasha Grey. What makes the video unique is how Bentz describes what exactly he does in the Navy — walking the viewer through the office, a job site and the gym, all with coffee close at hand. It’s unclear where Bentz is stationed, but…

Navy Secretary Ray Mabus wants you to be a winner. Winners root for Navy. Like Midshipman 1st Class Rylan Tuohy before them, Mabus and his team decided to channel a topical pop cultural moment with the leader’s 2015 Army-Navy video. If you’ve watched live television (or forgotten to fast-forward through your DVR’d commercials) at all this year, you’ve likely seen the two Robe Lowes or Tony Romos — one cool and one creepy, etc. — from DirectTV’s viral advertising campaign. In a nod to those ads, Mabus presents as two football fans: One Navy and one Army. One is looking forward to…

Navy quarterback Keenan Reynolds was back on the Heisman voting homepage Thursday, a day after a fan uproar when it was discovered that record-setting quarterback he had been automatically removed from the main ballot in an online fan poll for college football’s most prestigious award. The controversy erupted Wednesday afternoon, when @NavyAthletics sent out a tweet that they’d noticed Reynolds’ name mysteriously missing from the main page of ESPN’s fan voting contest for the Heisman trophy. A Deadspin story fueled the fire, and by that evening, ESPN had given a statement to the Washington Post about why Reynolds had vanished from the page. “Keenan Reynolds has…

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=svU2317XiPw Midshipman 1st Class Rylan Tuohy promised a blowout for his final Army-Navy game spirit spot, and he has delivered. With cameos from Chief of Naval Operations Adm. John Richardson and Naval Academy superintendent Vice Adm. Ted Carter, the video wraps together the academy’s prospective 14th-straight Army-Navy game win with the fall’s “Star Wars” fever in what’s more of a short film than a quick spot. But rather than capitalize on the forthcoming “Star Wars: The Force Awakens,” Tuohy kept it old school, re-imagining “Star Wars: A New Hope” as the tale of a mid in distress. Midshipman Leia is held captive…

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EypzUduBqiQ It’s an event years in the making: No, not the new Star Wars movie. The aircraft carrier Dwight D. Eisenhower is out of the yards! The ship officially emerged in late August, and as it prepares for its first deployment next summer after two years in a Norfolk dry-dock, the public affairs department released an anticipation-building video parody entitled, “Sea Wars: The Ike Awakens.” The video mirrors the “Star Wars: The Force Awakens” trailer, with a very startled petty officer third class on the flight deck, a rolling mop bucket beeping like R2-D2 and an F/A-18 Hornet battling an…

A movie about one of the great maritime disasters of World War II had a little disaster of its own. A WWII-era Navy sea plane broke up during shooting for an upcoming movie about the sinking of the USS Indianapolis near the end of WWII. A PBY aircraft used to stage the rescue of survivors was being used for the shoot started leaking as it was floating on the surface of the water, said Elizabeth Wolfe, spokeswoman for the film “USS Indianapolis: Men of Courage.” The film crew had to evacuate the plane for safety reasons. The crew attempted to…

The Islamic State group is trying to work on its special forces prowess. Well, they’ve got their work cut out for them, according to combat vets that viewed a recently released promotional video by the extremist group. The video, first posted by news site Vocativ, features a dozen scenes of training, door breaching and amphibious sneak attacks. There are countless reasons why this whole thing is a giant soup sandwich, a former Navy SEAL told Navy Times in a Wednesday interview. Starting with: Why kind of special ops mission happens in broad daylight? “Well, the only thing that they had…

Intruders beware: When this 80-pound German Shepherd isn’t patrolling Naval Air Station Patuxent River, Maryland, he’s training to take trespassers down at the drop of a command. Bleck, a 6-year-old German Shepherd, is assigned to Navy Installations Command as a member of Pax River’s force protection team along with his handler, Master-at-Arms 2nd Class Evan Desrosiers. Desrosiers knew when he joined the Navy more than a decade ago that he wanted to be a dog handler, he told Navy Times Tuesday, but he had to spend some time in the fleet as an MA before he could get orders for training at…

The Navy’s operational security program is making a big push for sailors and and their families to lock down their social media presence lately, in the wake of a list of service members posted to an Islamic State group supporter’s website last month. Though no imminent threats have been made against sailors, officials urged personnel to tighten the privacy settings on their social media accounts by making them private or unsearchable, and removing any military affiliation from their accounts. But the internet is a labyrinth of accessible personal information and confusing privacy settings, so the experts at Navy Information Operations…

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=h71avEN8KYA You’re probably familiar with the Rifleman’s Creed, recited by Marine Corps recruits at boot camp. This is my rifle. There are many like it, but this one is mine. But have you heard about the Deck Seaman’s Creed? Any sailor (and maybe officer) worth his or her salt knows the deep relationships formed during sweepers. My broom, without me, is useless. Without my broom, I am useless. The video hit the web March 21, posted by (presumably) Seaman Spencer Myers aboard the amphibious assault ship America. Sweep on, Seaman.
