https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=h71avEN8KYA You’re probably familiar with the Rifleman’s Creed, recited by Marine Corps recruits at boot camp. This is my rifle. There are many like it, but this one is mine. But have you heard about the Deck Seaman’s Creed? Any sailor (and maybe officer) worth his or her salt knows the deep relationships formed during sweepers. My broom, without me, is useless. Without my broom, I am useless. The video hit the web March 21, posted by (presumably) Seaman Spencer Myers aboard the amphibious assault ship America. Sweep on, Seaman.

Fifty sailors and recruits took the enlistment oath Wednesday on late night TV’s coolest stage: The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon. The blue curtains swept open to reveal Chief of Navy Reserve Vice Adm. Robin Braun, who led the oath for the recruits and sailors as part of the festivities for the Navy Reserve’s 100th anniversary. They also were featured with NBC’s Today Show and with Fox News’ Fox & Friends. The sailors and enlistees weren’t the only ones with a reason to celebrate. Fallon became an honorary member of the U.S. Navy Reserve – with a stenciled ball cap, to boot.…

Sure, Bruce Willis played a Navy SEAL in 2013 who wants to bring some “Die Hard”-like bravado to a mission. But our pick for the best Saturday Night Live segment that has featured the U.S. Navy is from the early days. Datelined in Bayonne, New Jersey, this 1979 parody of the Navy’s commercial – “It’s not just a job. It’s an adventure.” — features sailors at work. Some thoughts from our staff writer Mark D. Faram, who at the time it aired was a photographer’s mate airman aboard the aircraft carrier John F. Kennedy: Was on the ship this particular Saturday…

Shore duty means more time with your family, sure, but it can also mean more time on your rear end. Health researchers have been publishing study after study lately on the health dangers of sitting at a desk all day, but fear not! There’s a workout you can do while you’re answering emails — and it’s 51 years old. All Hands magazine published a nine-step fitness routine for sailors to complete at their desk, which is demonstrated in illustrations by a recruit, apprentice, seaman, petty officer 1st class, petty officer 2nd class and a master chief. Hat tip to TIME magazine, which used…

Calling all San Diego sailors: If you’ve got some free time Tuesday evening, TV network TNT is holding an open casting call for extras for its Navy-themed show “The Last Ship,” according to a Monday post on the Naval Base San Diego Facebook page. Navy social media’s #selfiewithasailor hash tag has gotten some good play this year, with appearances by Navy Secretary Ray Mabus and other naval notables, but selfie queen Kim Kardashian is easily the service’s most famous get so far. https://twitter.com/USNavy/status/539804436441202689 Kardashian toured the amphibious transport dock San Diego in Abu Dhabi last week, posing for photos with aircraft and personnel. She tweeted out several of the photos, including the above, with a Petty Officer 3rd Class Dart, Seaman Boland and one unidentified sailor in blueberries. For more snaps from her trip, click here. If you could take your #selfiewithasailor with anyone,…

This year’s Bob Feller Act of Valor Awards go to……………. Major League Baseball’s Nick Swisher, a Cleveland Indians outfielder; Baseball Hall-of-Famer Tommy Lasorda, former Dodgers manager; and Senior Chief Aviation Electronics Technician Carl Thompson, the calibration laboratory lead chief petty officer on the carrier George Washington. “This is a tremendous honor and such a humbling experience for me,” Thompson said in a statement after the awards were announced Oct. 10. “I am overwhelmed and extremely excited at the same time. I would have never dreamed that I would receive an award for the way I live my life, but I am…

Dating at a small school can be complicated, particularly when there are all kinds of rules about canoodling outside of your rank or within your company. Luckily, the Naval Academy midshipmen looking to cross over to the dark side have a place to publicly declare their affection for one another on the USNA Crushes site, where the moderator (moderators?) posts anonymously submitted love notes. There are 100 posts as of Friday, with 952 likes and counting. Most of them are unique, but there are a couple of popular kids with more than one admirer. Allison Shafer and Ryan Breznik, congratulations.…

If you’re looking for some cinematic firefights after Christmas Day presents and brunch, you’re in luck. The film version of former Navy SEAL Chief Special Operator Chris Kyle’s best-selling American Sniper memoir is coming to theaters Christmas Day, the tale of his path toward 160 confirmed kills, the most of any shooter in American history. Actor Bradley Cooper was able to meet with Kyle once before the SEAL was murdered in 2013. “Thank God I got to talk to him once on the phone. It was a very quick conversation. But I did tell him how serious I was about…

Last year, Chief Hospital Corpsman (DV/FMF) Garth Sinclair, Detroit Tigers pitcher Justin Verlander and New York Yankees legend Yogi Berra were the first to receive the Bob Feller Act of Valor award, named for a man who was also a chief petty officer, a pitcher and a baseball legend. Earlier this year, The Bob Feller Award Act of Valor foundation opened the nomination process for the award’s second year. Each Major League Baseball team was asked to nominate an active player and/or hall-of-famer who has made significant contributions to the military or veteran communities.
