[HTML1] The aircraft carrier Abraham Lincoln entered a Virginia shipyard last March for a midlife overhaul that will last until October 2016. While the flattop is out of the fleet’s deployment plans for the foreseeable future, that doesn’t mean its sailors are getting a break. In the video above, from his ship’s barren bridge, Capt. Karl Thomas gives his crew an update on the carrier’s progress — which, to this point, has involved having a chunk of its island removed, its catapults taken apart and the bulk of its guts ripped out. It’s a once-in-a-lifetime procedure for a nuclear carrier,…

Were the turtles not cute enough for you? Don’t worry, Scoop Deck has you covered: [HTML1] Those of you who made it through the video without cuteness-induced euphoria may want to know more about the Warrior Canine Connection, which helps veterans with combat-related psychological issues train service dogs for fellow vets. The Navy’s All Hands magazine put the group in the spotlight in a recent piece, highlighting the work of one WCC-trained dog at Walter Reed National Military Medical Center Bethesda, Md. In the video, Puppy Program Manager and Trainer Cheryl Tipton outlines the training process. It’s the first stage…

While the U.S. Navy awaits the delivery of the first-in-class aircraft carrier Gerald R. Ford in 2016, the Chinese navy appears to have its own flattop-construction milestone on the horizon. According to media reports, China’s second carrier is under construction and slated for delivery in 2018. It’ll join the Liaoning, which debuted in 2012. It’s not exactly an armada, but every carrier fleet has to start somewhere. The Chinese carrier fleet, for example, started in the Ukraine. In 1998, a Hong Kong travel agency reportedly bought the unfinished, Cold War-era carrier Varyag from that former Soviet state, claiming it planned…

Coast Guardsmen at Training Center Cape May, N.J., got a high-profile visit Saturday morning. But it didn’t mean they could skip a workout. Sen. Cory Booker, a Democrat from New Jersey and former mayor of Newark, came by along with Republican Rep. Frank LoBiondo and Cape May elected officials. They visited, according to a Coast Guard news release, to “get a first-hand look at how integral the Coast Guard is to the safety, security and economic stability of New Jersey and [the] nation.” Photo op? Sure, but some Coasties got a chance to interact with Booker, providing they (or he)…

A Navy flight instructor who found love online started off the new year with a ride in the Rose Parade, courtesy of the matchmaking service that linked him with his future wife. Lt. Cmdr. Rich Daniels and wife Kay, married in 2011, were one of seven couples on the eHarmony float that helped ring in the New Year in Pasadena, Calif. He wore his dress blues and waved while Natalie Cole belted out “Everlasting Love” and other songs from a float described in the official event program as “a beautiful floral extravaganza.” Some readers questioned whether Daniels was in violation…

What started as a Navy-themed TV drama with an impressive Hollywood pedigree slowly became a show without a ship, without a star — and, eventually, without a chance. “Wild Blue,” an aircraft carrier-based pilot pitched to Fox but delayed when producers couldn’t land a flattop to film on, won’t be shot after all, according to multiple reports. Both The Hollywood Reporter and Deadline.com said the show’s stumbles weren’t limited to finding a carrier; in fact, plans called for filming to commence without a flattop to accommodate the schedule of potential leading man Tim McGraw — country music superstar, “Friday Night…

First, turn down your volume slightly. Next, check out this video for a last bit of pre-Christmas cheer: [HTML1] That’s Hospitalman Apprentice Robert Everhart, surprising his girlfriend, Michelle Gungon, with a marriage proposal at Sharp Memorial Hospital in San Diego on Monday. Robert, attending “C” school in San Antonio, came home a day early. “I was expecting to see him today at 5,” Michelle said in a Christmas Eve interview. “I had this whole thing planned out.” She said yes anyway, to the applause (and loud cheers/shouts/huzzahs/etc.) of her co-workers. Robert, 30, comes from a Navy family — his father…

Bill Cosby’s first TV stand-up comedy special in 30 years will air on American Forces Network on Friday, and viewers will be able to chat live with the man who, nearly 60 years ago, served as a Navy corpsman. “Far From Finished” debuted on Comedy Central on Nov. 23. Reviews ranged from “predictably safe” to “comedy of the highest form”; Scoop Deck caught the show on a re-air and can say, without fear of contradiction, that it’s somewhere in the middle. Cosby served from 1956 to 1961 before heading to Temple University and then to superstardom that crosses generations and…

Sideways launch? Check. “Anchors Aweigh” in the background? Check. Big splash? Double check. The future littoral combat ship Milwaukee, what will be the Navy’s fifth LCS and the third Freedom-class variant, hit the water Wednesday in a ceremony at the Marinette Marine shipyard in Marinette, Wis. Sylvia Panetta, wife of former Defense Secretary Leon Panetta, performed the christening honors prior to launch. The LCS will be the fifth Navy ship named for the largest city in Wisconsin, according to a Navy news release issued before the ceremony. The most recent, an oiler, was decommissioned in 1994; its crew was represented…

First came the picture. In 1999, when retired Capt. Bob Rasmussen’s son, then-Lt. Cmdr. Eric Rasmussen, came home from a deployment, someone snapped a picture of the family reunion: Two young daughters rushing to meet Dad, with Mom holding an even younger son. “That would be something to preserve forever,” Bob Rasmussen remembers thinking. And if you need something preserved forever, there are few better people to ask than Rasmussen: Noted sculptor and director of the National Naval Aviation Museum in Pensacola, Fla. He filed the idea away for years. About 18 months ago, he started sculpting “Homecoming,” a life-sized…
