121013-N-OR551-042 GULF OF ADEN (Oct. 13, 2012) The multipurpose amphibious assault ship USS Iwo Jima (LHD 7) commemorated the 237th birthday of the U.S. Navy with a special birthday cake made from 220 eggs, 47 cups of water, 40 pounds of flour, 40 pounds of sugar, 2 1/2 cups of non fat milk, 15 pounds of shortening, 1 pound, 4 ounces of baking powder, 1 cup, 4 tablespoons of salt, and 20 ounces of vanilla. The theme for the cake was “past & present” and displayed a miniature model of the USS Constitution and today’s Navy NWU’s. Iwo Jima Amphibious Ready Group and embarked 24th Marine Expeditionary Unit are deployed in support of maritime security operations and theater security cooperation efforts in the U.S. 5th Fleet area of responsibility.
